happy leap day

everyone!!

And what is leap year you ask?....why this extra day?

A leap year (or intercalary or bissextile year) is a year containing one additional day (or, in the case of lunisolar calendars, a month) in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year.[1] Because seasons and astronomical events do not repeat in a whole number of days, a calendar that had the same number of days in each year would, over time, drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting (or intercalating) an additional day or month into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year that is not a leap year is called a common year.
For example, in the Gregorian calendar (a common solar calendar), February in a leap year has 29 days instead of the usual 28, so the year lasts 366 days instead of the usual 365. Similarly, in the Hebrew calendar (a lunisolar calendar), a 13th lunar month is added seven times every 19 years to the twelve lunar months in its common years to keep its calendar year from drifting through the seasons too rapidly.

Thanks wikipedia!

It's gorgeous and sunny in Chicago today...so, if you're anywhere around here...take advantage of the amazing weather.

cool kids

So, I received the Crewcuts catalog in the mail yesterday....wow....not only does it make me want to break the bank to buy all sorts of stuff for Ryan, but it makes me want to be young enough to wear the stuff myself....if I could only get that time machine working, I'd be all set!

quarter life.....

Today my sweet (young) friend Melissa turns 25.  She appears to be quiet when you first meet her, but once you get to know her...BAM!  she's quite the little firecracker. :)

She is embarking on a new adventure over the next few months, and I wish her the best of luck.  I'm so proud of her!

So, happy day to you Melissa Carol!

oddly wonderful..with a dash of inspiration

Happy Monday!

So, a few posts ago I talked about my love for the gallery wall (which is still fully intact).  I saw this at Anthropologie and thought it was a perfect mix of a gallery wall / wall of mirrors (something that I'm hoping to do on our staircase).

Crazily enough this collected memories mirror is nearly $700....so, I'm wondering if this wouldn't be a great DIY project....hmmmmm

What do you think?

to make meals in this kitchen.

pretty cool, right?

I just had a delightful lunch with two of my favorite people....Mal and  Melissa.  And in between inhaling our food, we laughed like little school girls.  Can't ask for much more on a Friday.

Hope your Friday is bringing you some giggles. :)

tweet tweet....

So, I bit the bullet and joined Twitter.  And, now I'm hooked.  I check it before I even think of looking at facebook....that says a lot.

Mind you, I only have 17 followers, and I'm following about 100 people (other bloggers, fashion and interior design people, a few friends, etc)....but I love it.

I don't exactly know all of the rules of tweeting....so, I asked my friend Melissa (who is my twitter mentor ;))  to give us her top 10 rules....

Hi!   Melissa here with my Top 10 Rules of Tweeting....

1. # tag keywords

2. Mention anyone/anything using their twitter handle (i.e.: Just lunched @brunchchicago today, delicious!)

3. If you like a brand, follow them locally for deals and the inside scoop.

4. Don't make yourself sound illiterate.  If it doesn't fit into 140 characters, then don't tweet it!

5. Don't go on tangents.  I will unfollow you immediately.

6. If you want people to open a picture you attached, don't tell them exactly what it is..leave them curious enough to want to open it.

7. Make your profile public, so people can retweet you.

8. Don't be afraid to retweet what someone has said if you liked it.

9. What is all this talk of retweeting you ask?  It's essentially copying/pasting someone else's tweet (because you enjoyed it).

10. Don't be a twitter hater.  Join it and you'll love it.  Promise!

Thanks for the twitter lesson Melissa!

Follow us both on twitter.  We tweet often!

happy day of love....and 100th post!!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

I know that couples are the target for this holiday, but I say that Valentine's Day is for everyone! Celebrate the day/night and do something fun and unexpected.

Tell all of the people in your life that you're kooky about them (friends, siblings, parents, everyone!).  Life is far too short to keep all of those lovely sentiments inside.  Share!

I have been waiting to share this short/sweet little video by my favorite Scott Schuman, and his lovely and talented partner Garance..I thought it was appropriate today.

Enjoy.

Oh, and happy 100th post to me!  Thank you so much for coming to this little space I've created on a continual basis.  I so appreciate it, and if you leave comments, an extra smile for you.  I love the comments..love them!

NYFW....it has arrived

Truth be told, I'm a total fashion junkie.  I know random tidbits about designers, models...Harper's Bazaar is my all time favorite magazine.  It's a bit of an illness.

Today was the official start of NYFW.  I have always wanted to attend the shows...or even just be in NYC during this stretch of days where the who's who in fashion can be found.  Someday Cheryl, someday.

What about you guys?  Any other big fashion fans out there that would love to attend the shows?  Who would you want to see?

I have several, but at the top of my list is Oscar De La Renta.  I adore him.  And his clothing is gorgeous.

periodicals with a side of zebra, please...

via

Hi everyone, sorry for the lack of posting lately....was feeling a little under the weather.

I saw this, and my eyes lit up...magazines AND zebra print.  Amazing.

If you're a magazine junkie like I am, how do you go about keeping them organized?  It's a constant struggle for me...would love some ideas.

one for one....

Ok, here in Chicago it's been in the 50's this week...insane...and wonderful.

And what does that mean?  It means you can actually break out the flats!  And wear them outside!

Look what Tom's has cooked up for spring!!

Toms

I've long been a fan of Toms and their movement (as well as a big fan of their shoes):

In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.

Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:

•A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.

•Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.

•Many times children can't attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they don't go to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the opportunity to realize their potential.

As of September 2010, Toms has given over 1,000,000 pairs of new shoes to children in need around the world.

It's literally the best 2 for 1 deal you can get.....a great new pair of shoes for yourself, while putting a new pair of shoes on a little kid.

Pretty awesome.

February!!!....clean slate

Happy February 1st!

New month...clean slate.

And a new room to admire....how awesome are those cowhide chairs?!

Although my home is the opposite of minimal, I love this room and its clean lines.

I would also like to do a quick birthday shoutout to my dear friend and old college roommate, Tracy.  Oh, the stories we could tell about our times together!  Happy day to you!  We don't see one another often, but you have a very special place in my heart. :)
